Happy Mother’s Day

Today is Mother’s Day and all over the United States, people who are privileged to have their mothers around are taking them out and sending them gifts. Posting photos, making phone calls, and showing love to their momma. Not everyone is able to put their mother in a 2 Chainz video, so I’m doing my thanks through writing. I just want to say thank you to all the mothers that are doing the best that they can for their families, especially my mother and motherly figures in my life.

As a grown ass man, I’ve come to understand and appreciation my mother so much more compared to when I was a jit. The sacrifices and struggles that she endured as a young, Black mother of four is so impressive to me now. She’s finally living the life she wants, but I can only imagine the daunting tasks of raising strong willed Black boys and a Black girl. As a child, you tend to have a naive view of the world and your parents, but as an adult, you gain new insights that could change your viewpoint on your folk. I thank my mother for the countless ass-whoopins, working multiple jobs to put food on the table, and the level of realness that she always seemed to give to us. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t say “damn, that’s my mother showing” or “yep, I’m my mother’s child”. Without my mother, I wouldn’t have:

*Left my hometown in search of building a better life for myself and my future family.

*Accepted who I am, mistakes and all.

*An example of a strong, determined, unconquerable Black woman in my life.

*Someone to remind me that the spirits of my grandparents were at my wedding and console me.

*Someone to allow me to make my own decisions regarding the relationship with my father.

*Been born, duh!

There’s so many other things that would’ve never happened if I didn’t have my mother and thankfully, I don’t have to imagine it. I’m blessed/privileged to still have my mother present in my life and I’m learning more about her now than I did when I was younger. I’m thankful for all the conversations and insights that we’re having now. Words cannot describe fully how much you mean to me. Thank you for being so amazing mom!

In addition to my birth mother, I have to thank the motherly figures in my life that also shaped me more than they know:

*Momma Williams

*Momma Vera

*Momma Chester

*Momma Em

Thank you to each of you for the guidance and love that you given me in life.

Happy Mother’s Day!
