Challenge: Day #13 (With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility)

As the day comes to a close, I must say that I’m thankful for the Most High for blessing me with awesome mentees. In college, I learned about the importance of mentorship and how it can influence your life in so many ways. Luckily, I was able to connect with people who serve as professional, financial, and career mentors who provided so much insight into my life. Despite all of their differences, my mentors share a passion for living their fullest lives, challenge me to be the best, and to never forget about the community. One of the less obvious similarities I realized was that they always took younger folks under their wings and served as mentors to them. Mentorship is critical to success, however, it’s even more important for Black men. Mentorship helped me get to where I’m at in my life now, so its only right that I pass along the knowledge that’s been given to me.

“Smart people learn from their mistakes. Wise people learn from the mistakes of others.”

I love mentoring the young Black kings and queens in my life. I learn so much from them and they learn from me. I noticed one of my mentors always had a range of friends in his circle and I recall asking him his rationale for it. He shared that it kept him grounded as well as informed about what’s happening in the world from various perspectives. It made sense because he always stayed current on music, media, and everything else. I adopted the same mentorship style and I must say that its great.

Today I was able to see one of my favorite mentees and I was just happy to see them so successful in their life. We talked about what’s it like to just start out in life and make things happen while searching for happiness. They’re thriving at work and slowly thriving in their personal life. I remember feeling lost in my journey at different points in life, but I looked to my mentors to help me. I’m doing the same for a group of students. Being a mentor is such an important role and I don’t take it lightly. I’m humbled that my mentees allow me the space to share my knowledge and insight with them. I want to do right by them, just like those before me did in my life. There’s a popular quote in the Marvel universe where Peter Parker’s Uncle says, “With great power comes great responsibility” and today, I’m thankful that I have the responsibility to my mentees.
